Women Who Have the Need for Speed
Classic cars aren?t the only reason you?ll want to be at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction the week of January 17 in Scottsdale, Arizona. On Wednesday, January 19, from 10 a.m. until noon, ?Women Who Have the Need for Speed? will be the subject of a panel discussion in the 500-seat ?garage area? at Barrett-Jackson.
The panelists are:
Desire Wilson, the only woman to win a Formula One race (as a result, one of the grandstands at Brands Hatch was named in her honor);
Melanie Troxel, winner in both the NHRA?s Top Fuel and Funny Car categories and a nominee in 2006 for ESPN?s Female Athlete of the Year honors;
Jessica Brunelli, though still a teenager, she was rookie of the year at two NASCAR late model tracks in 2010;
Denise McCluggage, who raced against the likes of Stirling Moss, Phil Hill and others in the heyday of sports car racing in the 1950s and ?60s;
Kenna Primm, Universal Technical Institute scholarship winner and graduate who now builds engines for NASCAR teams.
The moderator knows something about fast women as well. She?s Lyn St. James, a former rookie of the year at Indianapolis.
McCluggage and St. James also will participate in a panel discussion Sunday, January 16, at the annual Wheels of Wellness race car show in downtown Phoenix.
Women in racing is much the topic of discussion in Phoenix this month, in part because the Henry Ford?s traveling exhibit, Women in the Winner?s Circle, will be at the Arizona Science Center from January 1 through March 31.

My Racing Wish List for Santa
Christmas is only a day away and as I sit here jonesing for some kind, ANY kind of racing to watch on televison or read about online, I keep thinking about what I want Santa to bring me for Christmas. Yes, my wish list includes lots of noble things like a cure for cancer, world peace, the elimination of poverty and a few hearts and souls for select Senators, Congressman, bank presidents and media moguls. But from a selfish, after-the-important-stuff-is-taken-care-of point of view, here's what I really want Santa Claus to deliver:
A flash of genius set of specs for the 2012 IndyCar from Tony Cotman. Sometime in the near future, Cotman will release the new chassis and engine rules that will shape the next generation of IndyCars. I want them to be great, not just different or good so America's oldest form of championship motorsports can return to glory ... not necessarily at NASCAR's expense, but if so, oh well.
An announcement that NASCAR is going back to body shapes that actually look like the cars we see in showrooms and on the street, with full-size sedans in the Sprint Cup Series and ponycars for the Nationwide Series. Oh, and more road races for all three series, including the Camping World trucks, with at least one scheduled for the Chase.
The abandonment of the Chase format for NASCAR. I believe motor racing championships should be determined by a full season's results, independent of how popular the NFL is when the NASCAR season is winding down, the way they've been since forever.
The return of racing a full quarter mile for NHRA Top Fuel and Funny Car teams. If some tracks can't host races because they don't have enough real estate for a safe runoff area, so be it; move the races to tracks that can handle the speed. And if the cars are just going too damn fast as they approach the finish line then change the rules for the equipment instead of the track.
A merger between the American Le Mans Series and the Grand-Am Rolex Series -- or at least a comparable rules package. One series has nine events and the other has an even dozen right now, they obviously share no venues and I think a 21-race season would be ideal. Heck, I'd even take dueling conferences, a la the NFL and AFC in football, or the Eastern and Western conferences in the NBA, with the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the 12 hours of Sebring, a new six-hour combined race at Road America and the Petit Le Mans as combined events.
A new, rear-engined dirt/pavement car to replace the Silver Crown car in USAC. Almost forty years ago Carl Gelhausen, among others, introduced rear-engine Sprint Cars that were promptly outlawed because they were going to make all existing chassis obsolete. Bad move. Because now, as a direct result of those actions, the path from dirt to pavement to the Indy 500 has become equally obsolete.
A series for the Delta Wing car. When Ben Bowlby conceived the swoopy new, ugly-to-some/Natalie Portman -gorgeous to others, no wings, four-banger-powered IndyCar he pushed the edge of the envelope further than anyone thought possible -- or, in some cases, practical. I love the open source design philosophy, the 'green' efficiencies and the premise that 300 horsepower can deliver 230 mph speeds at Indianapolis. Talk about flash of genius.
A short oval track in or around Phoenix. I live in the fifth largest city in America and now that Manzanita is gone we are bullring-less. The ultimate would be an Irwindale -like 'half mile superspeedway' but I'd take just about anything within fifty miles of the Valley of the Sun, preferably paved, with real VIP Suites instead of the single wide trailers, on top of the grandstands, that swayed like a drunker sailor when the wind blew like Manzy had.
A "Why can't we all just get along?"-style fantasy racing game for Racing In America and The Henry Ford that follows stock car, sports car, open wheel and even drag racing.
What's on your wish list?
Merry Christmas!

End of an Era: The Last "New Track Record" at Indy
To the most recent generation of IndyCar fans, the words "new track record" mean almost nothing. Tom Carnegie's voice is a relic of a bygone era, from back when the Indianapolis 500 championed innovation (remember, the first 50 or so years of the event featured front-engine roadsters) and the sport hadn't even seen the creation of CART.
But new IndyCar czar Randy Bernard is determined to change that. In an attempt to return the series to the foreground of American motorsports, he's been initiating wholesale changes across the sport, with the advent of a new car for the 2012 season and beyond. Of Arie Luyendyk's Indy 500 qualifying runs in 1996, speed marks that stand to this day, Bernard says, "I want (them) gone."
Now, breaking new speed barriers has been a part of racing from the very beginning, but to top what Luyendyk did that May goes even further. It brings the sport back to what it was in the first place - the fastest closed-circuit racing in the world - and erases yet another lasting memory of the open-wheel "split" that nearly destroyed it in the late 1990s and most of the 2000s. To understand just how much more significant Luyendyk's record is than a simple speed record, you have to know the circumstances under which it was set.
1996 was the first year that the Indianapolis 500 was not run as part of the CART calendar. Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Tony George, determined to bring more Americans and ovals into what had become a States-based Formula 1, formed the Indy Racing League as a rival sanctioning body, and took the sport's crown jewel with him. Fans felt that this first "scrub" 500 would be a joke compared to the show that CART would put on at Michigan on the same day.
The drivers were, for the most part, CART castoffs - defending race polesitter Scott Brayton, 1990 race winner Arie Luyendyk, and ex-F1 pilot Eddie Cheever among them - or young American no-names from a variety of different backgrounds. Save for A.J. Foyt, Dick Simon, and John Menard, most of the owners were no-names as well. The cars were former CART models from between 1992 and 1995, meaning the speeds would stay relatively the same, provided the drivers could handle them.
On Pole Day, Davy Jones started the fun, breaking Roberto Guerrero's 1992 single-lap and four-lap track records by hitting 232 miles per hour. Not long after, Tony Stewart, a hotshot rookie driving for Menard, broke the 233 mph barrier. But Luyendyk had most everybody's number, breaking 234 on a single lap and setting a new four-lap average of 233.390, new records that would give him the pole. He had a history of being fast at the track - he won the fastest 500 ever, in 1990.
Or so it appeared. Brayton, who had already been on the front row, withdrew his locked-in car and requalified with a backup, his four-lap average good for the pole. Luyendyk's single-lap record still stood, until post-qualifying inspection deemed the car underweight, giving both records to Brayton.
Luyendyk's team, furious, responded by sending him out the next day with the fastest car in Speedway history.
The Reynard-Ford was achieving speeds north of 237 miles per hour. All four laps set new track records, the last three breaking the 38-second barrier at the Speedway for the first time. Luyendyk's final four-lap average was 236.985, his best lap 237.498.
Five days later, Brayton died after completing a 228 mile per hour lap. His car spun and slammed the wall in turn two, sliding 600 feet from the point of impact. It was the first death at the track since Jovy Marcelo in 1992, and raised concerns about whether the cars were too fast to be safe. In 1997, according to previously announced plans, the IRL introduced new car specifications, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a person who doesn't think that Brayton's passing didn't contribute to the new formula. The cars were slowed down nearly 20 miles per hour, making the racing much safer - no drivers died in that iteration of IRL chassis - but putting the hope of new track records out of reach. Meanwhile, CART kept at its own pace, eventually crumbling under unstable management and yielding to the Champ Car World Series.
And so it's been ever since. Dallara has done a solid job of producing IndyCar chassis, but with the same 225 mile per hour car on track since 2003, and Honda detuning engines with no manufacturer competition, the sport stumbled through a spec era. But with Bernard in charge and change on the horizon, keep Luyendyk's 1996 track record in mind. It may fall sooner than you think.

What Was The Biggest Story This Year in NASCAR?
Lately, I have been racking my brain lately thinking about what was the biggest story of the 2010 NASCAR season. I asked this question on Twitter and Facebook and was amazed at some of the responses.
I think it all comes down to what teams you root for.
Jimmie Johnson's Story
For me, it was about Jimmie Johnson and the #48 Lowes team winning again. No surprise there since I am a Jimmie Johnson fan, but this year it was a lot closer and that made it special. Being the underdog even though he was the past champion with one race to go added to the drama. He rose to the occasion just like a true champion would.Along with that story is also that of the pit crew change between the #48 and Jeff Gordon's teamwith two weeks to go. It is not common for a pit crew to be replaced during a race but it may have just won them the championship. At the end of the day Rick Hendrick showed everyone that it was all about team work.
Jeff Gordon's Story
Since I brought up Jeff Gordon's name it would be fair to talk about his year, a win-less year at that. Then the fight with Jeff Burton near the end of the year made him a story to talk about this past year. I am sure the pressure will be on him and his new sponsor to get a win right out of the 2011 season.
Jamie McMurray's Story
For a couple of fans it was the breakthrough of Jamie McMurray winning the Daytona 500, and the Brickyard 400 for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. I know it's been a long time coming for those fans of Jamie's that are glad to see him finally win some big races. His fans are some of the most loyal there is.Some stories are still happening that will really have an effect of the 20010 NASCAR season.
Hendricks Motorsports' Story
Winless and getting a new crew chief: all that needs to be said amongst the other Hendricks Motorsports teams. Between Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt Jr, and Jeff Gordon not one team could produce a single win, so Rick Hendrick swapped the crew chiefs between the teams. Dale Jr wasn't working well with his crew chief and Jeff Gordon needed a change too. I think Mark Martin got the short end of the stick but we will see.What do you think was the biggest story this year?
