Race, Reuse, Recycle: A Call to Action
The Indianapolis 500 celebrates its centennial this year. This is not a story about Indy, though it is about the cars that used to race there.
One of those cars, a 2000 Lola chassis, was all but destroyed in a crash at another stop on the Indycar racing circuit. Fortunately, that ?tub? ended up at the DeLaSalle Education Center high school in Kansas City, Mo., where ?at-risk? students and their mentor-instructors thought it would enhance their education and inspire their futures if instead of just studying car design and construction, they could actually design and build a car of their own.
By the way, by ?at-risk? we?re talking about teenagers who, in many cases, had experience with drugs and violence and without what DeLaSalle offers might be heading soon to incarceration or interment.
Instead, they took a race car chassis that also had no future and turned it into an amazing electric-powered vehicle with a see-through skin that they?ve tested at Bridgestone?s Texas Proving Grounds track. They also got to make field trips to Ford?s design studios in Michigan and to the automotive technology and restoration department at McPherson College in Kansas. The car will be on display in early May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Working one-on-one with their mentors, the students restored the Indy car tub, designed and fabricated the shrink-wrap style, see-through body and its wire-frame support, installed the electric motors and other components, and even drove the car for its test laps at Fort Stockton, Texas.
They call it experiential learning, and it continues as the DeLaSalle students continue to develop the car so it can go farther and faster on each recharge. By the way, those students also are going farther and faster. They?re staying in school and graduating and enrolling in college.
And now those original DeLaSalle mentors have formed a non-profit called MINDDRIVE so they can share the program with other students at other schools, which is where you come in. I?m sure that some of you who read this website either are or have been Indy team owners or know people who are or have been Indy team owners and who therefore have a bunch of old, obsolete chassis cluttering up their garages.
Except as the kids in KC have shown us, those tubs aren?t obsolete. They can be used to teach and to inspire another generation.
So this is a call to action. Contact someone at MINDDRIVE through www.minddrive.org website and donate those tubs, and then offer to become a mentor at a school in your own community. You?ve won on the track, now win for the future.

What Will a New Points System Mean for the 2011 NASCAR Season?
Ever since I caught parts of the Sprint Cup testing at Daytona International Speedway last week, I?ve been getting excited about the new season. Actually, excited doesn?t begin to even cover it; raring to go would be more accurate. Like ?Gentlemen Start Your Engines,? let?s go, racing ready. BRING IT ON!As NASCAR announced yesterday, the points structure has changed this season. Everyone is in a roar about it with the usual pro-change and anti-change arguments. My initial gut reaction was to be anti-change. I thought it was dumb to change the points structure. My main argument; that you don?t see football or baseball or even basketball just up and changing their scoring system and I believe NASCAR has a sound one.
However, when further contemplating this new points structure I realize that it isn't ALL that different. The most points for a race are now only 48 (43 for first, three bonus points for the win, one bonus point for leading a lap, and one bonus point for leading the most laps). It?s still the same concept with just fewer points. I am no mathematician but I think that in the end this will still reward consistency in the drivers. The only negative thing I can think of is it can make a bad day really bad, but with there only being 48 max points available it might make recovering from that bad day a little easier. I guess only time will tell. More of a concern to me was the announcement about the change in the way the chase field will be set. The first 10 will still be set in the chase. But the 11th and 12th spots in the chase will not necessarily go to those who are 11th and 12th in points. Those two spots are now available to whomever in positions 11-20 who has the most wins. It takes away the reward for consistency and makes it based only on your ability to get to the checkers first. This will make those rain-shortened race wins all the more critical so pit strategy because paramount. I am unsure how I feel about this change. Some believe it will make for a more exciting race to the chase as well as a more exciting chase itself, but I am not sure. Ask me at the end of the season. The order for qualifying will now be set on practice speeds instead of by random draw. This will put more of an emphasis on first practice and dialing in the car as soon as possible. There is also all the driver and team changes that will taking getting use to. I am talking about seeing Kasey Kahne in the #4 Red Bull car, Kurt Busch in the #22 Shell car and seeing Kevin Harvick in the #29 Budweiser car are but a few I can think of right off the top of my head. NASCAR fans are use to these kind of changes, but it doesn?t mean that we won?t all be confused during the first couple of races as to who is who out there!Even with all the changes I can?t wait for the season to get underway. I sit her and wait and wait for the activities in Daytona to get underway. Let?s go racing?soon!

David?s Blog: Keeping Busy During Off Week
David has a full week of appearances and racing during this off week from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
With the Centennial of the Indianapolis 500 this month, what is your Indy memory?
This month marks the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500, which was the greatest American race decades before Ken Squier tried to claim that title for Bill France?s sedan show. Indeed, decades before there even was a Daytona 500, the Indy 500 was the greatest race and not just in America but on the entire planet.
That no longer is true, but we?ll ignore that for now as we celebrate the history of the race and of a race track that has modernized nicely while clinging so tightly to its own history that it still has a brick-paved finish line.
Looking back at one hundred years of Indy 500s got me rooting around in the archives ? O.K., I just the shelves out in the garage -- where I found a scrapbook that preserves the full-page 500 preview I wrote for the Joliet (Illinois) Herald-News on Sunday, May 25, 1969.
I was still in college, though just days away from graduation, but worked weekends and summers as a sportswriter for my hometown daily newspaper, covering everything from high school sports to the United Auto Racing Association, which staged midget races on the paved quarter-mile track that surrounded the football field at Joliet Memorial Stadium. This was back in the day when Indy racers raced several nights a week, driving sprints and midgets, and occasionally one of the Bettenhausens from nearby Tinley Park or maybe Mel Kenyon would come from Indiana and bring their midgets to race when there was an open date on the USAC schedule.
Occasionally, one of our local drivers would be invited to take a run around Indy, either in testing or to attempt a qualifying run. UARA racer Roger West went to the Brickyard in 1969 and 1970 but didn?t make the 33-car grid either time.
With money I made writing about sports, I?d bought a brand new fastback Ford Mustang, sort of a college graduation present to myself, and my editor at the newspaper and our wives got up at o-dark-30 on race day and drove down to Indy for what would be the first of many 500s I?d cover at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, that year for the Herald-News, and later for newspapers in Michigan and eventually for AutoWeek magazine.
?Granatelli and Andretti have a history of being snake bitten at Indianapolis,? I wrote in my preview story in 1969, ?so this year they?re teaming with hopes that ?Italian power? will cure their Indy ills.?
However, I added, those ills appeared to have continued so far that month of May: ?Andretti walked away from a fiery crash last Wednesday that destroyed the fastest of Granatelli?s cars.?
I don?t have a copy of the story I wrote after the race, though we all recall how, after crashing Andy Granatelli?s fastest car, Mario Andretti started the race in the team?s backup car, a Brawner Hawk, and drove it to a victory celebration that included a big kiss on the cheek from Granatelli.
Well, that was my first Indy experience. What was yours?

Female Racers Free to Be Themselves at the Track
PHOENIX -- I suspect that if I gave you six guesses, or for that matter, sixty six guesses, you still wouldn?t guess what Danica Patrick is doing today, Monday, January 17, 2011.
Is she testing an Indy car? Nope.
How about shooting another music video or Sports Illustrated swim suit photo? Nope and nope.
And nope and more nopes to your other guesses.
So, what is she doing?
?I?m taking a sewing class,? Patrick said here Sunday during one of two panel discussions that were part of the fourth annual Wheels of Wellness historic racing car show, which annually kicks off classic car auction week in Arizona?s Valley of the Sun.
Though people may assume she has to be the ultimate tom boy to go wheel to wheel in the 200-mph world of Indy car racing, ?I enjoy being a girl,? Patrick said. ?And I like to iron. I?m very much a girl.?
Patrick?s point, I think, was that you really can be a woman and a race car driver. She found no disagreement among the other panelists -- Desire Wilson, former South African racing champion and the only woman to win a Formula One race; Denise McCluggage, pioneering sports car racer as well as the first woman to receive press credentials to cover the Indy 500; Bobby Rahal and Dario Franchitti, neither of them a woman but both Indianapolis 500 winners; and moderator Lyn St. James, the first woman to win rookie of the year honors at Indy.
The panel was to have included one more driver, three-time Indy pole winner Tom Sneva, but his grandson was racing his quarter-midget elsewhere in Phoenix and Sneva is crew chief and had to make that duty his priority.
Patrick also said she and the growing number of women now participating in motorsports have benefited from the groundwork established by women racers of previous generations. The history of women in American is being highlighted this year in the Women in the Winner?s Circle, a traveling exhibit from The Henry Ford museum.
McCluggage not only raced before there were corporate sponsors, but even before there were what we now recognize as professional racing teams, and she talked about how in 1961, she drove her own Ferrari 250 GT from New York to Sebring, where, with a co-driver, she won her class in the 12-hour race -- and was 10th overall -- then drove the car home by way of Chicago.
Some two decades later, Wilson was approached by Bernie Ecclestone about joining his Brabham F1 team as Nelson Piquet?s teammate. Instead, Ecclestone put another driver in the car and Wilson found a ride with the Ken Tyrrell?s team.
When she asked Ecclestone why he changed his mind, she was told the other driver -- Hector Rebaque -- ?has really good hands.?
Wilson looked at her hands and asked if they were not good enough.
?His hands write really big checks,? Ecclestone responded in his way of saying that Rebaque and his sponsors had purchased his ride.
Meanwhile, Patrick noted that when she returned from racing Formula Fords in England, it was Rahal who personally engineered her Barber-Dodge series car, and then put her into his Toyota Atlantic racer and, in 2005, into one of the Rahal-Letterman Indy cars.
